Suzanne Otwell-Nègre

Suzanne Otwell-Negre dans l'atelierBorn in the US and living in France, Suzanne Otwell-Nègre has been creating and making jewelry for more than forty years. Her father being in charge of representing American culture abroad, she had the fantastic opportunity of travelling and still has impressions of light, shapes, colors from many magical countries.

After studying art history in Chicago and at the Sorbonne, she was led to jewelry making an artists' jewelry exhibition.

She learned the basic techniques from American books and from he sculptor husband. Two stays in the studio of Carl Dau, a great Berlin jeweler, taught me a lot, especially about accuracy and precision.

A "bocfil" saw, files and a soldering torch are her main tools. The play of light on silver and gold is the essential element in her work.

Often the textured metal forms are juxtaposed and superimposed, the shapes let the light and shadows animate the piece, a three-dimensional volume comes to life. Sometimes the color of a precious stone is incorporated into the composition, following the lines of the metal. The result must remain elegant and wearable.
